Electing new members to the Cobb EMC Board of Directors offers the best way for members to change the direction of the troubled co-op. All 10 seats on the Board of Directors are up for election in 2010--provided legal barriers to holding elections are overcome. Members will have the opportunity to vote for reform candidates running for local Area seats. The GA Court of Appeals must first deliver a decision on a pending lawsuit before balloting can proceed.
According to current plans, the next step after the court decision will be a special membership election to determine the rules that will govern the election for Board of Directors.
REMEMBER THIS IMPORTANT FACT: Voting in Cobb EMC is on an at-large basis. That is, while a candidate for the Board has to reside in the Area from which he is running, all members get to vote on all the candidates. Even if your particular Area is not up for election, or if it is but no challenger candidate has qualified, you can vote for all the reform candidates on the ballot. YOUR VOTE WILL COUNT.
YOUR VOTE WILL ALSO COUNT in that special election to determine election rules.
To sum up:
• There is no date in sight for the courts to deliver a final verdict allowing elections to proceed.
• Therefore, there is no date for holding the special membership meeting/election to set the rules.
• Therefore, there are no set dates for members to vote on any of the above.
So, what should members concerned about the future of their co-op do right now? Use the time to:
• GET INFORMED about the reform candidates
who are challenging the discredited incumbents.
• BE ALERT to a letter from Cobb EMC
notifying you about the membership meeting
and the vote on mail-in voting.
• VOTE “NO” on MAIL-IN voting for
directors unless Cobb EMC clarifies its proposal.
• STAY IN TOUCH with the Cobb Alliance for
Smart Energy for updates.
